Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can easily become bored and find ways to keep themselves entertained even if their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. If they are not socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is crucial to have clear boundaries set so the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They must spend at least two to three hours each day in the outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. They are not only an excellent pet, but is also a great pet for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud calls which can be annoying to those living in condos or apartments.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only way to determine the sex. Once the bird's sex is known the breeding process can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and recognize that this is a challenging task. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, vowed to come up with plans with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean not an empty concrete tank.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

The first stage of the training is System I. System II builds on the foundations introduced in System 1 by incorporating exercises on equipment. It also introduces teachers to the exercises that use the Spine Corrector, Magic Circle, Foam Rollers and Bars. This module comes with a handbook and a DVD that features Lolita teaching you the system.
After you have completed the teacher training program of Lolita, you will be ready to teach the Pilates Method anywhere in the world! This program will prepare you to work safely, effectively and professionally with clients. You will gain an understanding of the different exercises and their interactions. You can apply this understanding to any body and to make your clients feel safe, strong and confident. Lolita's legacy has produced open-minded teachers who have a complete knowledge of the Pilates Method, outstanding teaching skills and an unconditional enthusiasm for this amazing exercise method that Joseph Pilates created. Lolita's Diet
A balanced diet is vital for the health of a blue and gold macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food and plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live for up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of room to move around and exercise.

Lolita's Health

Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to a life in the wild than before. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
After years of public pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can go swimming in the deep sea and possibly even be being reunited with her mother orca. Sadly, these plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
